GST – Tally and other Software Providing the Services

GST was implemented from 1st July 26, 2017, with an objective to unify all the indirect taxes and cover them under a single umbrella of Goods and Service Tax in India. While it is said that GST will make taxation system more smooth, transparent and will ensure the free flow of funds.

Along with all these advantages, the most crucial part is how the taxpayers will transition from old laws to GST and maintain proper compliance required on their part. Now, with the implementation of GST taxpayers are required to keep and maintain all the records relating to all their purchases and sales, and give proper intimation of the same in GSTR-1 and GSTR-2 respectively. Their tax liability will be determined based on such intimations. To maintain such records, it is advisable for them to have a sound technical backup.

Currently, there are the accounting as well as filing software for GST are available in the market. There are different software that suits the need of a taxpayer depending upon the size of their operations. For example,

  • Large organizations/taxpayers prefer SAP software
  • Middle size, Some small and growing organizations/taxpayers prefer Tally
  • Small and Micro organizations prefer Excel, QuickBooks, and ZOHO.

 Different Accounting and Filing Software for GST

SAP

SAP provides software and technology solutions. Arun Subramanian, Vice-President of Globalization services, SAP Labs India, had earlier said: “SAP has a well-defined road map to simplify GST for businesses”.  To do GST compliances, existing users will have to switch to the relevant version of SAP. For this purpose, taxpayers are required to get SAP ERP 6.0 (600) SP26 or higher version.

Currently, taxpayers are using TAXIJN concept for tax determination; now they are required to switch to TAXINN concept, which is concept based, unlike the earlier one which is formula based.

SAP for SMEs

It is a big task to keep track of all the transactions for any organization. In the case of Small and medium sized enterprises, it becomes an added burden as they have limited resources. SAP has launched a solution for this which can help them be GST compliant. SAP had introduced an all inclusive solution for SMEs by the name of ‘GST in a box.’

Sunil Kharbanda, Chief Customer Officer, SAP India Sub Continent had earlier said “As the technology enabler of the nation, we are committed to empowering SMEs here, be ready for this new tax regime,”

Tally

Tally is one of the most popular and widely used accounting software.It is one of the most economical software available in the market depending upon its features.

Many users who are using tally as an accounting tool for their business have a question if tally can still be used or be helpful after the implementation of GST. Tally ERP 9 is GST compatible. It helps a business in succeeding in a controlled and integrated environment. It is an accountant friendly software and can be used without an internet connection. Multiple company data, as well as branch manager, can be done with this software.

Along with tax management, Tally can also help in;

  • Inventory management
  • Financial management
  • HR and payroll management
  • Purchase order management, etc.

Cost:

If it is for single user, it costs around Rs.21,780

IF it is for multiple users, it costs around Rs.65,340

And the annual renewal fee is 25% of such cost.

Quick Books

QuickBooks is one of the popular cloud based accounting system, which helps in the management of stock and handling customer transaction. It has quick and easy to use and helps in;

  • Book-keeping
  • Tax determination and filing.

One of the main features is that fully cloud based thus no data loss risk exists and free upgrades of the software are available.

With all those features it still lacks in many parts, as following facilities are not available in it:

  • It doesn’t work without internet connection.
  • No inventory management feature is available.
  • Cannot be customized.
  • Only seven users can use it.
  • Branch consolidation not possible.

COST: Rs.5000, and have to pay annual renewal fee is 100%

Zoho Books

This one is similar to quick books, but one of the key difference is the price, this is available at the cost of Rs. 2500, and annual renewal fee is 100%.
